Venom Reviews

October 5, 2018
A tone-deaf, uneven and maddeningly dumb clunker that never settles on an identity, all the way to the closing credits.

It's hard to mess up a car chase up and down the streets of San Francisco and Fleischer certainly doesn't, though at these speeds we should be gasping and laughing instead of just nodding our heads.

Is it a comedy? Is it an action film? [Venom] makes no pretense of being anything more than a superhero film,... trading the thematic material present in most major superhero ventures for biting off people's heads.

The Venom symbiote requires a perfect match to bond with its host; otherwise, the host is doomed. The Venom movie plays like a midnight horror that has invaded a superhero movie, and while there are some laffs to be had, it's far from a perfect match.

Mostly bad-bad, with a splash and dash of fun.

Certainly I'm in a minority when it comes to my fellow critics, but I liked "Venom." Hell, if it wasn't for the sloppy and formulaic script, I might have even loved it.

It turns out Venom isn't much different than the alien who starred in NBC's 1980s sitcom ALF: A pushy boor motivated mostly by his next snack.

"Venom" could become Marvel's version of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" or "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" -- a camp classic worth mocking again and again.

The chief problem with "Venom" is that it never settles on a tone. Is it comedy? Horror? Romance? Drama? Why not try all of them at once?

A horribly scripted film so bad as to be enjoyable, but not bad enough to be good.

On the Marvel scale of greatness, with 1 being the least pleasing and 10 the most amazing, Venom might be around a 3.5, a 4 if you're in a really good mood.
October 4, 2018
Part of the reason the superhero genre has managed to elevate itself is it gives us characters that we root for and care about. Venom does none of this.

At some future gala event where Tom Hardy is being feted for his incredible acting career, the clip from Venom will be the one that gets the audience laughing.

It's just not an especially good superhero movie and it wastes an intriguing premise.

It's an incoherent mess of tones, acting styles and visual effects. And yet it's kind of a hoot.

A picture in the running for the dubious distinction of being perhaps the worst Marvel-derived origin story ever. And that includes the odious 2015 "Fantastic Four."

There's nothing memorable in "Venom," nothing to talk about the next day. But if it happens to hit you right, its lightness is refreshing.

More monster movie than a superhero one, Sony's attempt to expand its Spider-Man franchise with this solo vehicle for one of his more colorful villains makes a mess of the tone, staggering from horror-tinged nastiness to split-personality comedy.
October 4, 2018
The ingratiating eccentricities of "Venom" aren't enough to really distinguish the movie from its superhero-movie brethren as it devolves into the usual expensive orgy of sound, fury and wisecracking.
October 4, 2018
A tonally wonky lark that's actually stronger when it's sillier. It's a mess, but a fun mess-at least for a while.

At the very least, Venom feels as if Fleischer was shooting two radically different movies at once, and even in the final edit it's not clear which he chose.

"Venom"? More like cyanide.

Even the great Tom Hardy is defeated by this tone-deaf Marvel botch job, which delivers a puddle of simplistic, sanitized PG-13 drivel instead of the scary, dark-night-of-the-soul thunderbolt fans had every right to expect..

The film contains a vast wealth of laughs that emanate from a kind of action-comedy slapstick I sincerely didn't know Tom Hardy had in him.
October 3, 2018
Why can't the movie make Venom properly dirty? The PG-13 rating seriously hurts.

The filmmakers seem faintly aware that not all comic book characters are superheroes, but unsure of what else Venom could actually be.

"Venom" feels like pretty weak poison.
October 2, 2018
A significant problem in a film full of them is that Eddie comes off as a dope, an eager dufus hardly convincing as a boundary-pushing journo or someone who can out-think a titan of technology.
October 2, 2018
It never rises above bombastic and busy - which is something I never thought I'd say about a movie starring three aces like Hardy, Ahmed, and Williams.

This radically different approach will surely be jarring to some, but the fact that this movie could never exist in the same world as "Captain America: Civil War" despite hailing from the same brand of comics is part of its charm.

If you replaced Tom Hardy for Steve Martin in "All of Me," and switched out Lily Tomlin for a wad of chewed-up black licorice, you'd have "Venom."
October 2, 2018
"Venom" is a textbook case of a comic-book film that's unexciting in its ho-hum competence, and even its visual-effects bravura.
