The entire endeavor has a bitter aftertaste that frequently overwhelms the sensibility of mad spectacle that Fleischer and his performers strive to tease from the material.

Well, sorry to break it to you, but Venom is one massive missed opportunity.

It's not a good movie, but considering the box office numbers, it won't be long until we see the sequel that this movie ham-fistedly foreshadowed.

...Come to enjoy Tom Hardy acting crazy and some slick visuals. Other than that, it's likely you'll be disappointed on some level.

An aimless, awful embarrassment for everyone involved, Venom imagines a world where a dopey Peter Parker-type was instead bitten by a radioactive turd.

[Sony] has a great Venom in Tom Hardy. If only they had a better-equipped director, screenwriters, visual effects, and supporting cast.

Venom is a bad movie. There is no questioning that. However, if you are in the right mindset, it's still incredibly watchable as a so-bad-its-good hot mess.

Venom poisons the well of its own goodwill by a series of misfiring, illogical plot points and lack of respect for its own universe's rules.

Like Brock's relationship with Venom, the movie exists in constant turmoil between dueling desires to be simultaneously formulaic and spontaneous.

It's a film that feels more like a buddy sit-com with some weird tonal shifts that just undermine everything happening on the screen. It never quite clicks.

Creating a cult following is always fun and worth something, but it will not warrant the legs for a series that can keep up with the majority of people left wanting more.

There's nothing here but a noisy and dumb piece of fluff that simply isn't trying hard enough.

Venom isn't the home run Sony was hoping for and it certainly isn't the film longtime fans have been craving, but the good news is that Hardy is really fun in the role.

Here's the thing. "Venom" is both one of the worst films of the year so far, as well as one of the most fun.

If Venom ends up becoming the Green Lantern (that Tom) Hardy makes on the way to something better, then all Hardy's effort will have been worth it.
