Stine's books became a publishing phenomenon by offering scary-story tropes to readers who weren't ready to be scared. Following in their footsteps with less success, Haunted Halloween seems to be aimed at audiences who don't want to be engaged.
Sandel's sequel adheres so closely to the first film's story arc - a bunch of monsters dreamed up by author R.L. Stine come to life and terrorize a small town and some plucky kids - that it removes the possibility of any surprises.
It should please younger fans of the books who will have no problem with its rudimentary storyline all too repetitive of the original. But it does feel like a missed opportunity to elevate the valuable franchise to bigger and more imaginative heights.
